Optical Fibre Sensors - Principle

Various designs are available, but 2 types are usually considered  :

  • intrinsic (the optical fibre is used for the transduction of the mesurand)
  • extrinsic (the transduction is given by a specific component and the fibre is used for the transportation of the signal)

Optical Fibre Sensors - Applications

  • Inertial navigation systems
    • Optical Fibre Gyros (Sagnac interferometry)
  • Ageing of civil structures (strain and deformation monitoring of bridges, tunnels, ...)
  • Off-shore
    • Hydrophones (acoustic)
    • Pressure and temperature
  • Chemical analysis
    • Pollutants, pathogens detection (Biosensors)
  • ...
