A TRADITION OF TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION

Bretagne is one of France's leading biotech regions (ranked 4th on the BioMap2010)
With strong natural potential (marine and agricultural resources), undisputed know-how in the agrifood industry and high-level technological skills, Bretagne is well positioned in all business sectors.

Indeed, over the past 20 years many raw material processing companies have been created to handle the increase in vegetal and marine production. Capbiotek has identified 150 Bretagne-based companies that have incorporated industrial biotech-related techniques into their business activities.

A DENSE NETWORK OF BIOTECH STAKEHOLDERS

Bretagne has a well-structured biotech sector, with a very dense network of research labs and companies involved in or using biotechnologies. These skills are located on several sites, and collaborate via a “shared technologies” mode: Rennes, Ploufragan, Roscoff, Morlaix, Fougères, Brest, Lannion, Saint-Brieuc, Saint-Malo, Lorient, Vitré and Vannes.

  • 6000 staff in the biotech/life science industry
  • A dynamic SME environment and the creation of the Bretagne Biosciences business club
  • a cumulative turnover of about €400 million (estimation for 2010)

Technical and academic resources

  • 63 academic research groups
  • 26 technological core facilities and innovation centres
  • 2 university medical centers (in Brest and Rennes)
  • 4 universities
  • 22 other higher education and research institutions
  • 7 research parks and clusters
  • Many national research institute labs (INSERM, CNRS, INRA, IFREMER, CEMAGREF, etc.)
