BIOSERVICES

Project Description

The road from a "hit" to a safe, effective, marketed compound is a long one: molecular characterization, in vitro screening, toxicological testing, animal studies and clinical trials. The type of testing required depends on the target market (registered drugs, nutraceuticals with health claims, foods, animal health, cosmetics, biomaterials, biofuels, etc.) and the corresponding regulatory requirements. Moreover, the added value, development time and cost of market entry will vary strongly as a function of the field of application. However, cross-sector synergy can result from use of the methods from one field in another (example nutraceutical/pharmaceutical synergy).

Project goals

The project aims at (i) identifying the region's bioservice offering for confirming the value of a given compound and (ii) presenting these services in a clear, coherent manner so as to address business needs and raise Bretagne's profile.

The activities :

  • Step 1 :
Identification of the services offered by private and public-sector providers (including biological resource centers) and that enable the transition "from the molecule to the market".
  • Step 2 :
Benchmarking of the region's skills with those in other bioregions in Europe and the USA. This will help to define a strategic positioning and prompt the development of Capbiotek-branded promotional tools. The goal is to be able to effectively promote Bretagne's service offering at target conferences via appropriate marketing and PR activities.
  • Step 3 :
The identification of "missing links" in Bretagne and unmet needs on the national level will trigger efforts to address these issues. Cross-sector synergy will also be leveraged.

Challenges for Bretagne

Ultimately, these activities will prompt the creation of a dense network of bioservice providers (CROs, technical facilities, etc.). This service offering will be formatted and promoted through targeted, virtual entry points to facilitate access to the network by potential customers from the biotech sector. This common service offering will position Bretagne as a major player in France and internationally for compound testing in the biotech sector and will thus attract more customers and partners.
