The region's optronics sector was built on true expertise in telecoms applications. Bretagne has hi-tech skills in special optic fibers and the development of laser sources. With a view to now-essential diversification, it quickly became clear that these same skills could contribute to the development of new solutions for needs in the life science sector (healthcare, the environment, agrifood, marine resources, etc.). Bretagne's skills in biophotonics encompass a task-force of about 160 researchers and 250 staff in around twenty companies and technical facilities.

Project goals

The BIOPHOTEK project is seeking to raise the sector's profile on the French, European and worldwide levels. This is why we have created a dedicated web site (http://www.capbiotek.fr/photonique/) that lists all the stakeholders and their respective skills. In addition to structured, strengthened marketing efforts, the BIOPHOTEK project also aims at federating the sector's stakeholders around a joint project (based on the PERFOS Technological Innovation Center, www.perfos.com). The goal is to create a biophotonics demonstration platform and build cross-sector projects in emerging markets, such as process control and monitoring in microalgae production (healthcare, cosmetics and biofuels), the agrifood industry (dairy products), the environment (detection of marine pollutants) and healthcare (cancer diagnostics, phototherapy and skin rejuvenation, etc.). This project will encourage stakeholders from different sectors to work together.
